Dr. Stuart A. Ryder to Receive Special Service Award During Homecoming 2018

Dr. Stuart A. Ryder-Homecoming(ELGIN, IL – June 29, 2018) Judson University will bestow a “50 Years of Service Award” on Professor Emeritus Dr. Stuart A. “Doc” Ryder during Homecoming festivities Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 27-29 on the Judson campus.

Dr. Ryder has been a longtime faculty member, supporter and staple on the Judson campus. He began his career at Judson in 1969 as an English professor and was pivotal in developing the university’s Communication Arts program, which is still thriving today.

Since then, the Yale-educated professor has taught Linguistics and Literature and served terms as chair of the Communication Arts department. He was also a Cross Country coach and men’s trainer before his retirement in 2003.

Dr. Ryder is a beloved person on campus. He has written books about university namesake Adoniram Judson and Judson’s first president, Dr. Benjamin P. Browne, in “Adventures in Fait” and even wrote a book to help his throngs of former students understand the ever-present question, “Why Didn’t I Get an A?”

Doc Ryder was inducted in Judson’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. An academic scholarship was named and endowed in his honor in 2004, and he received the prized Golden Eagle Award in 2009. He was given the distinguished title of Faculty Emeritus in 2010.

Ryder hasn’t just worked at Judson for decades; he has lived here, on and off for 40 years. He shares on-campus residence with his cat, Figaro, (one of seven cats he has had over the years – all named Figaro or Lily).

In addition to sharing his bright smile and friendly disposition, Doc continues to be a generous contributor to numerous building funds, student scholarships and improvement projects on campus.

He will be awarded the “50 Years of Judson Service” honor on Saturday, Sept. 29, during the Alumni Luncheon and Program, which will also acknowledge the recipients of the Family Legacy Award, Distinguished Alumni Awards and the Alumnus of the Year Award. The luncheon will be held in Lindner Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The price for the luncheon is $20 for adults and $10 for children, ages 4-12. Attendees must register and pay in advance.
