Educator and Literacy Advocate Kelly Gallagher to Speak at "A Day at Judson" on May 7
(Elgin, IL - April 18, 2013) Judson's School of Education will host its annual "A Day at Judson" seminar, featuring educator and literacy advocate Kelly Gallagher, beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7 in the Lindner Campus Commons (1151 N. State St.).
The annual seminar invites area educators to hear from leading experts in the field of education. Educators can earn six CDPUS by attending this event. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Gallagher will discuss effective methods for teaching writing to young adults in a series of lectures titled, "Write Like This: Teaching Real-World Writing Through Modeling and Mentor Texts." Gallagher will focus on the practical application of writing strategies, helping educators to elevate student writing in grades 4-12.

In addition to teaching English full-time at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California, Gallagher has an extensive background in secondary literacy education. He served as the English Coordinator for the Anaheim Union High School District, an urban district comprised of 37,000 secondary students; a Co-Director of the South Basin Writing Project at California State University Long Beach; and an adjunct professor at California State University, Fullerton, where he taught secondary literacy courses.
Gallagher is a teacher and a former statewide trainer for the Puente Project, a University of California outreach program that prepares under-represented high school students for successful transition into universities. He has also served as a teacher leader in the California Reading and Literature Project, both at the University of California Los Angeles and University of California Irvine.
In 2005, Gallagher received the Award for Classroom Excellence by the California Association of Teachers of English, the state's highest honor for English teachers. Gallagher has authored several publications designed to help educators and school administrators improve literacy among adolescents, and travels extensively to speak to education professionals about his literacy expertise.
