Judson University Celebrates Spanish-English Ministry Students in Formal Certification Ceremony

SEMS Certificate Awards (Elgin, IL – October 13, 2011) Judson University celebrated with 12 students in a ceremony for completing certificates in Spanish-English Ministry Studies (SEMS) on September 23 in Herrick Chapel on Judson’s Elgin campus.

The program, created in collaboration with several local churches, is housed under Judson's Leadership Development Group. Participating students are primarily lay leaders in local Hispanic churches. Though the program does not provide academic credit, each of the courses was taught in Spanish by leaders with doctorates and extensive experience in Spanish ministry. The program provides in-depth ministry and biblical education that the students may not have been able to attain otherwise.

Certificate recipients were Ana Adame, East Dundee, Ill.; Roberto Adame, East Dundee, Ill.; William Aguilar, Round Lake Beach, Ill. Ricardo Donoso, Streamwood, Ill.; José Gutiérrez, Elgin, Ill.; Francisco Hernández, South Elgin, Ill.; Ana M. León, Elgin, Ill.; Graciana López, Elgin, Ill.; Rosa M. Ruiz, Carpentersville, Ill.; Susana Sierra-Manso, Bartlett, Ill.; Raúl Villegas, Elgin, Ill.; Abraham Velasco, Rockford, Ill.; and Samuel Quintana, Elgin, Ill.

"One hundred years ago Judson was founded as a ministry of Northern Seminary in Chicago with the purpose of training English speaking church leaders. A century later, we find ourselves turning back to our roots to train church leaders in Elgin, but this time in Spanish. The SEMS program is a perfect fit for our history and our mission," says Judson President Dr. Jerry Cain.

Those interested in enrolling in the next cohort can contact Program Director Rev. Dr. Ben Manso, Minister at Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana of Elgin, at pibhelgin@sbcglobal.net.
