Judson University’s Theater to Present The Wizard of Oz

Wiz of Oz(Elgin, IL  October 11, 2010) Follow the yellow brick road to Judson University’s upcoming production of one of the most popular musicals of all time, “The Wizard of Oz.”

“This is the biggest musical theater production Judson has ever done,’’ says the play’s director, Dave Hunter, a Judson alum and resident of Elgin.

Performances will be held in Judson University’s Herrick Chapel (1151 N. State St., Elgin) at 7 p.m., Thursday, October 28 through Saturday, October 30 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 31. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for students, $8 for seniors and groups of 15 or more. To order tickets, call 847-628-2625.

For those not from Kansas, “The Wizard of Oz” is the tale of Dorothy, who dreams of a better world “somewhere over the rainbow.” When Dorothy is thrust into the eye of a tornado and lands in the fantasy world of Oz, she soon finds herself in a heap of trouble. She meets a very unusual cast of characters in Oz -- the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. Together they go on a quest to see the Wizard of Oz, each of them seeking what they want most in life. They make their way along the yellow brick road that leads to the Emerald City through a series of hair-raising encounters, all with an evil witch at their heels and no way to get home!

The classic story of “The Wizard of Oz” has been shared in many different media forms since the original novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum was published in 1900. It was turned into a very popular Broadway musical stage play in 1902. The musical made its silver-screen debut in 1939, starring Judy Garland.

Now, Judson University’s Theater has brought together more than 50 actors, including Judson students, faculty, staff, and staff children along with special effects, costumes and choreography to present the fun and magic of this classic tale, says Hunter.

Top Billing includes: Melissa Hoegh (Elgin, IL) as Dorothy, Mary Taylor (Crystal Lake, IL) as the Wicked Witch, Mary Poulter (Morrison, IL) as Glinda, Juddson Updike (Carmel, IN) as the Tin Man, Jesse Sault (Naperville, IL) as the Cowardly Lion, Mike Nicosia (Elgin, IL) as the Scarecrow, Joshua Sandrali (a Rawandian student living with a sponsor family in Indianapolis) as the Wizard, and Luke Copeland (Angier, NC) as the Gatekeeper.

Join Judson Theater as they venture into the wonderful world of Oz and encounter lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my!
