Judson University Announces Partnership and New Scholarship for Boys and Girls Club of Elgin's Youth of the Year Recipient

YOY Award Winner Xavier Hare and Diana Winton(ELGIN, IL – March 7, 2018) Starting this year, Judson University will partner with the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin to offer a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to the high school student who wins the organization’s Youth of the Year Award.

Last night during the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin’s Youth of the Year Awards program at the Centre of Elgin that student was 18-year-old Elgin resident Xavier Hare, who is a senior at Central High School in Elgin, Ill. Hare has been going to the club since he was 8 years old. That is where he learned to read and where, he said, he felt most safe.

This year, Hare becomes the first student to receive the Youth of the Year scholarship. Now, each year going forward, Judson will offer the Youth of the Year winner a four-year scholarship to Judson University upon graduating high school. Hare intends to study art, network communications and business. He said he wants to spend his time giving back to others and “changing lives.”

Since 1947, the Youth of the Year Award has been Boys & Girls Club of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of club members. Each year, one exceptional youth from a Boys & Girls Club program rises to the role of National Youth of the Year, too.

During last night’s program, Judson’s Director of Financial Aid Diana Winton made the big announcement about the scholarship. “It is my extreme honor to be a part of the Youth of the Year Program and to announce that every year, beginning this year, Judson University will be offering the Youth of the Year winner a four-year scholarship,” Winton said. “This scholarship is valued at over $100,000 and will offer the winner a tuition-free education at Judson University, the University that shapes lives that shape the world! Thank you for allowing us to partner with honoring the Youth of the Year!”

Pastor Larry Henderson from the Kingdom Advancement Center, vice president of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin, said the new partnership would be a game changer for many local youths in the years to come. “As you know, many members of the Boys & Girls Club lack the resources needed to further their education. Some do not even realize that going to college is an option for them,” said Pastor Henderson, who is also a member of Judson’s Spiritual Council. “The partnership will allow Youth of the Year winners for years to come a chance to beat the odds!”
