Judson University Professor Christine Starzynski Awarded as "Person of the Year" for LULAC Council #5236

(Elgin, IL - October 16, 2012) The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Institute, Inc. Council #5236 honored Judson University Professor and longstanding LULAC member Christine Starzynski "Person of the Year" at their annual meeting and awards ceremony on September 10.

"Chris was chosen as a member who has continually worked for the improvement of Latinos in the community," says LULAC #5236 President Helen Lopez Strom of Elgin, Ill.

"In her case she has done it through partnering with other organizations in the community to work with Latinas. She did not give up when we were not given the Ford Driving Dreams through Education Grant last year. She continued working with the youth using other funds and then applied for the grant again; this time being accepted," recounts Strom.

Starzynski has been an important proponent of growth for LULAC Council #5236 in her years as a member. Most recently, she wrote a grant for the local council to implement the Ford Motor Company Fund (FMCF) Driving Dreams through Education program, a measure designed to improve high school dropout rates among Latina students. FMCF awarded the $20,000 grant to LULAC Council #5236 this fall to help local Latina students graduate from high school on time. Through the Driving Dreams grant, Council #5236 will be able to work with Elgin School District U46 to expand the students’ knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math careers (STEM). Last year, these organizations teamed together to present the “Adelente” Conference, which targeted the same concerns. The Driving Dreams grant will help the group grow this program into a yearlong effort.

These programs have also received aid and support from other local organizations as well, including Judson University, the Kiwanis Benevolence Fund, Girl Scouts, the American Association of University Women, and Elgin Community College.

"It was a great honor to be recognized by LULAC as Person of the Year for my role as the scholarship chair and for the LULAC/Ford Motor Company grant," says Starzynski.

Founded in 1929, LULAC is the oldest Hispanic civic organization in the U.S. Council #5236 boasts more than 30 active and committed members and more than a decade of service to the Elgin, Carpentersville and Dundee communities.
