Judson University to Celebrate Hanging of 1940s Mural
(Elgin, IL - October 24, 2012) The School of Art, Design and Architecture will hold a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 15 in the Harm A. Weber Academic Center (1151 N. Stat St., Elgin) to celebrate the unveiling of a 1940s era mural on loan to the university from the Elgin Area Historical Museum.
The mural, which originally hung in the lobby of in the Simpson Electric Company in Elgin, depicts a World War II factory scene by the Chicago-based Italian artist John M. Cadel (1905-1970). The Elgin Area Historical Museum received the painting two years ago from the Lac Du Flambeau Indian tribe when the Simpson building - once the home of the Illinois Watch Case Company - was scheduled for demolition. In 2011, the museum approached Judson University about the possibility of displaying the mural on Judson’s campus. This fall, art student volunteers have been cleaning and preparing the mural for display under the guidance of Assistant Art and Design Professor Joseph Cory.
“It is a real honor to be able to display an item with such a strong connection to Elgin’s history. This is also another great opportunity to give our art students real world experience and introduce them to a few of the many possibilities that careers in art have to offer,” said Cory of this experience.
The painting will hang in the Harm A. Weber Academic Center on a three-year renewable loan from the museum. The Weber Center is a LEED-Gold certified building that houses the university's School of Art, Design and Architecture, as well as the university library.
