G.E. Colpitts has been a professor of art and design at Judson for over 16 years. She is currently a board member of the Illinois Higher Education Art Association. She earned her BA from Greenville College (Illinois) and her MA and MFA degrees from the School of Art at Northern Illinois University. Her work has been exhibited in numerous juried competitions both regionally and nationally, and in various Chicago galleries, including Wood Street Gallery, Ann Nathan Gallery, and the Chicago Cultural Center.  Current shows include the Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois (March – April 2013), the Women’s Works 2013 National Exhibition at the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock, Illinois (March – April 2013), and the Memorial Exhibition for Guy Chase in conjunction with the Schoenhals Fine Arts Symposium at Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois (March 2013).  Her talk on Contemporary Art and the Christian Artist’s Vocation is available for viewing on the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) Integration of Faith and Learning Channel.

Her current research interests are in drawing, ceramics, and American history. Her art, encompassed within Project 1216 and the Cenotaph Series, involves ongoing historical research and response to her discoveries through drawings and installations. Using a cross between landscape and still life, she examines the trauma inherent in the human condition, and explores the tension between narrative and metanarrative and the construction of meaning out of fragmentation and loss.

Apart from making art, she enjoys reading, traveling to different art museums around the country, and digging through dusty old archives, especially in Washington DC, which she thinks is the best city ever.

“In design, there are no magic formulas. There are only relationships. There are only degrees.”
