Dr. Varghese Mathai holds the Benjamin P. Browne Chair of Communications, named in honor of Judson University’s founder president. Prior to joining Judson, he served sequentially on the English faculties of the University of St. Thomas and of Bethel University, both in Minnesota. At Judson he teaches courses in British Poetry, Literature and Spirituality, African American Literature, and Writing. Dr. Mathai is the founding director of Judson University’s Honors Program.
Expertise / Involvements
Dr. Mathai’s academic credentials include the M.A. (English) and M.Phil (American Literature) degrees from Commonwealth universities and the Ph. D. from Baylor University. He is active in a number of professional organizations to which he contributes regularly.
Professional Societies or Affiliations
Dr. Mathai is a Fellow of the MacLaurin Institute at the University of Minnesota, a center for faculty development. At MacLaurin he has helped in creating academic partnerships and in organizing Worldview conferences. At Judson, in addition to his current responsibilities, he runs The King’s Errand, a face to face and online chapel program for spiritual formation. He also advises two of Judson’s overseas programs.
Grants and Scholarships
Dr. Mathai is a 2011-12 grantee of the Fulbright Award for a year of teaching and research at St. Stephen’s College of Delhi, India’s premier liberal arts college and a distinguished center for translation studies.
