English as a Second Language and Bilingual Language Programs

The objectives of the ESL/BL Program are to provide quality and meaningful instruction for teachers who want to work with linguistically and culturally diverse students and to promote quality educational programs that address English Language Learners and enable them to succeed in a global society.

Endorsement in ESL/BL will:

  • Increase your marketability in the field of elementary, middle school and secondary education.
  • Promote cross-cultural understanding.
  • Provide effective strategies to use with non-native English speakers.
  • Expand a teacher's ability to communicate and teach non-native Englisher speakers.

Spring, 3 credit hours
EDU311 Technology for Language Minority Students (Elective)
Summer, 3 credit hours
EDU314 Assessment of Language Minority Students
Fall, 3 credit hours
EDU315 Cross Cultural Education
Spring, 3 credit hours
EDU316 Linguistic Considerations for Reading/Writing in New Language
Summer, 3 credit hours
EDU317 Methods and Materials for Teaching English as a Second Language
Fall, 3 credit hours
EDU318 Methods and Materials for Teaching Bilingual Students
Spring, 3 credit hours

Additional Requirements for ESL and Bilingual Approval

Complete 18 semester hours of course credit
Complete 100 clock hours of ESL or Bilingual clinical experience or 3
months of teaching experience in ESL/BL classroom
For Bilingual, must pass a state language exam

Emily DoyleEmily Doyle is an Elementary Education major, and she enjoys spending her free time with friends either in the dorm or in Chicago.  Her membership in the Judson Student Organization (JSO) has been her most valuable experience at school.  She says, “This experience helped me grow closer with many people of other ages...
