Dr. Steven L. Layne has taught children at the elementary and junior high level for fifteen years. In addition, he has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses for over a decade at various institutions of higher education throughout northern Illinois including National Louis University, Northern Illinois University, and Wheaton College. Prior to accepting a full time appointment at Judson College, he traveled the country extensively working as a national literacy consultant for Staff Development for Educators. Dr. Layne is an acclaimed writer and researcher who frequently serves as a motivational keynote speaker and featured children's/young adult author at conferences and meetings held throughout the world. His published writings including dramatic monologues, prose, poetry, feature articles, textbook chapters, and children's book reviews have appeared in journals such as The Reading Teacher, The Middle School Journal, Contemporary Education, The Illinois Reading Council Journal, Reading Horizons, and The Illinois School Research and Development Journal. Dr. Layne has a growing collection of published children's picture books, young adult novels, and poetry/gift books many of which have won awards and honors from the literary community. He has been honored with national and state awards in the fields of research, teaching, and writing by numerous organizations such as USA Today, The International Reading Association, The National Council of Teachers of English, The Milken Family Foundation, The Illinois Reading Council, and The Illinois Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. He has served on a large number of state and national committees throughout his years in the field of reading education and held the office of President of the Illinois Reading Council for the 2005-2006 school year. Dr. Layne lives with his wife and four children in St. Charles, Illinois.
