Judson Community Music School


JCMS provides excellent, affordable music instruction to students of all ages. Lessons are taught by dedicated, experienced JCMS instructors in many instruments, voice, music theory and worship arts.

Lessons are 30 minutes in length and take place in the Thompson Center at Judson.


Important Dates

Fall 2015 Session: September 9 – December 4, 2015 (12 Lessons)
Payments Due: September 15 and October 20
Recital: Saturday, December 5, 2015

Spring 2016 Session: January 18 - April 22, 2016 (12 lessons)
Payments Due: January 22 and February 26
Recital: Saturday, April 23, 2016

Summer 2016 Session: May 9 - June 17, 2016 (5 lessons)
Payment Due: May 13
Recital: No Recital for Summer Session

Entrance into the Program
Fall and Spring Semesters (12 weeks): students may enter at Week 1 or Week 7.
Summer Session (6 weeks): students may enter at Week 1.

Mariclare Dempsey

Mariclare graduated cum laude in Vocal Performance at Judson University where she studied Vocal Pedagogy, Diction, and Literature. In addition to her primary instrument, she also pursued studies in Piano Pedagogy, Piano Literature, and Composition.

Stephen James Carter

Stephen has been teaching music for over 9 years and leading worship for over 18 years. He now serves multiple ministries in the area with his teaching and worship leading abilities. Stephen has written and produced two CD albums: You Long to Be Gracious (2007) and Better than Wine (2010). Stephen teaches Piano, Pop Vocal and Music & Worship training for students interested in learning the art of Worship (worship-leading, song-writing, chord charting and more.)

Rebeca Malmgren

Beca has been teaching with the Judson Community Music School for five years. This past year, Beca was the music teacher at St. Joseph Catholic School. She has also been the K-2nd Lead Teacher for the Fox Valley Music Camp for the last five summers. Beca is a certified teacher who especially enjoys working with students in Voice and Beginning Piano and teaches both group and private piano lessons. Beca also directs the JU Childen's Choir.

Suzanne Clarke

Suzanne is a certified music teacher who specializes in teaching piano and voice. In addition to maintaining a private piano and voice studio, she enjoys serving at her church as organist/pianist, choir conductor and praise band member.

Vicky has many years of playing and teaching experience. She enjoys working with all levels of students, especially children but also adults, including students with special needs. Vicky has a firm grasp of music theory and incorporates this important element into her lessons. She will also add any special interest areas the student may have, such as learning to play by ear or learning how to accompany others. She teaches private as well as group lessons.

Tara is an accomplished performer and instructor in both Violin and Viola. She can teach beginners using the Suzuki method as well as traditional methods - or a combination - depending on the parents’ desires. Tara also enjoys teaching advanced students. Tara is currently a member of the Rockford Symphony, a former member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and is a member of The Adoniram String Trio, a resident Music Faculty string ensemble at Judson University.

Adam Huff

Adam began his musical studies in the former-Soviet country of Belarus. There he studied the instrument with Alexander Leonidavich Ivanov. Later, he went on to study at the College- Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH attaining a bachelors and masters degree in guitar performance.

Sarah Mayer

Sarah was the accompanist for the Judson University Choir while studying at Judson as well as for her church, where she continues to serve as the church pianist. Sarah maintains a private piano studio and is active as an accompanist for several area choirs including community choirs, public school choirs, and a professional choir.

Joanna Newby

Joanna is an accomplished Violin and Viola performer and teacher. Orchestral performance experience includes the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra and most recently with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Joanna is a founding member of the Adoniram String Trio, Judson's resident faculty chamber group. While keeping her performance skills active, Joanna maintains a strong pre-college studio for advancing violinists and violists. Joanna also serves as a coach for the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra Chamber Institute.

String Bass (Intermediate to Advanced)

Timothy Shaffer

Tim has been a professional double bassist since the age of 20, when he joined the New Orleans Symphony. He lived for many years in Germany, where he was the principal bassist of the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the principal bassist of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and enjoys teaching and playing throughout the Chicago area. Tim has toured throughout the US, Europe and Japan.

Dr. Sojung Lee Hong

Sojung Lee Hong has enthusiastically combined her dual role as an educator and performer since her appointment to Judson University’s Music Faculty in 1998. Sojung has frequently been invited to speak and perform at events and conferences here in the United States as well as abroad.  Dr. Hong holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Seoul National University, South Korea (magna cum laude) and a doctoral degree in Piano Performance and Literature from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

Dr. Joshua Jones

Josh Jones joined the Music Faculty at Judson University in 2000. He teaches voice and voice-related courses as well as music theory and composition. A native of Indiana, Dr. Jones received his undergraduate degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, his Masters in Vocal Performance from Boston University and his Doctorates in Vocal Performance from Northwestern University. Dr. Jones is an active recitalist, composer and conductor.

Dr. Robert Kania

Robert Kania has served at Judson University since 2000, teaching piano, music theory and ear training. Dr. Kania received his undergraduate training in his native Poland at the Poznan Music College, and his Masters and Doctorates at the University of Kansas. As a recitalist, Dr. Kania has performed on three continents and has given master classes at several colleges and universities. Dr. Kania is the Chair of the Music Department at Judson University.

Our student teachers are skilled musicians on their primary instrument and are recommended for young students just beginning music lessons. Their availability each semester is dependent upon their academic workload and schedule.
