Josh Jones began his musical career as a singer and composer in Indianapolis while earning a Bachelor of Music degree from the Butler University Jordan College of Fine Arts, with a double major of vocal performance and music theory/composition.
He then moved to Boston, MA to pursue a Master of Music degree from the Boston University School for the Arts, with a major of vocal performance. During this time, Josh taught undergraduate students as part of a teaching fellowship with the music theory department while also working as a church musician.
He moved to the Chicagoland area for further pursuit of his education and musical career where he earned a Doctor of Music degree from the Northwestern University School of Music in Evanston, IL, with a major of vocal performance.
As an educator Dr. Jones teaches applied voice, voice-related courses, music theory, and composition courses. He is music director and conductor for various stage productions and small ensembles. He has served as music faculty at Judson University (Elgin, IL), Elmhurst College (Elmhurst, IL), and at the College of DuPage (Glen Ellyn, IL).
As a performer, he is an active recitalist in schools and churches throughout the Chicagoland area. He has been heard as a guest soloist with the DuPage Opera Theater, the DuPage Chorale & Orchestra, the Northwestern University Orchestra, the University of Illinois-Chicago Chorus, and the V.O.I.C.Experience; Dr. Jones also performs as a professional chorister with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Grant Park Music Festival.
As a composer, Dr. Jones has been featured in several new music recitals. His choral music has been sung by the Butler University Chorale, and his one-act opera “Poor Maddelena” was premiered in 1998. He has also had several compositions performed in local churches.
Dr. Jones serves as the music director at Epworth United Methodist Church in Elgin, IL where he conducts multiple choirs and leads a praise team.
Josh Jones lives in Gilberts, IL with his wife Coco and son Jacob. In his free time, he enjoys reading, writing, and playing guitar.
Expertise / Involvements
Dr. Jones specializes in the study of modern vocal music. He has recently completed a major research document focusing on composer William Ferris. It includes a biography, a study of his style, and an analysis of twelve of his songs. The document also includes new practical editions of the songs created from the original manuscripts.
Josh Jones has studied voice with Sunny Joy Langton, William Sharp, and Steven Stolen. He has coached with Sherrill Milnes, Alan Darling, and Richard Boldrey. He has performed in masterclasses for artists like Tony Randall and Richard Pearlman, and sung under the baton of conductors like Sir Andrew Davis, Bruno Bartoletti, and Carlos Kalmar.
