The morning's festivities began with the announcement of this year's winner of the D. Ray Wilson Award, Mary Rees Freeman. She has served on the boards and in volunteer positions for Altrusa International Club of Elgin for 10 years, Elgin; on the board and as past president of the Village of South Elgin Parks and Recreation Commissioner; on the board and as past president for the YWCA in Elgin for 13 years; as a volunteer for the Soup Kettle and Emergency Shelter Committee for the Elgin Cooperative Ministries for 15 years.

(Elgin, IL – May 6, 2013) Judson University celebrated 161 graduates that earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, 21 for the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership, 11 for the Master of Architecture, and five for the Master of Education degree at the 69th commencement on Saturday, May 4.

The Christian liberal arts and sciences university held two commencement exercises, one at 10 a.m. for graduates of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Art, Design and Architecture, and another at 2 p.m. for graduates of the School of Education and the School of Leadership and Business.

He has accepted a position at Wheaton College as Regional Director of Development beginning April 1, 2013. Tory has held seven different positions at Judson since August of 1990 including; Classroom Instructor, Basketball Coach, Director of Retention, Dean of Students, Associate Athletic Director and Vice President for External Relations. For 16 years, Tory and his wife, Sandy, lived on campus and raised their five children here, with Sandy serving as Resident Director at Volkman Hall.

HBO’s Multi-Part, Multi-Platform Series Addressing the National Obesity Epidemic

(Elgin, IL March 18, 2013) In the United States, 68 percent of adults age 20 and older are overweight or obese, while 31.7% of the nation’s children and adolescents ages two to 19 are overweight or obese. Obesity contributes to five of the 10 leading causes of death in America, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, many cancers and stroke. As part of its effort to help combat the obesity epidemic in our community, Judson University is hosting a screening of Part 4, Challenges, at 7 p.m., Monday, March 18 at the Judson University Thompson Performing Arts Center (1151 N. State St., Elgin). Three years in the making, THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION examines the facts and myths of this urgent public health issue, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and the health care system. The film features case studies and interviews with leading experts, individuals and families struggling with obesity. Judson University Students to Spend Spring Break Abroad for Missions and Choir Tour

(Elgin, IL March 11, 2013) Judson University commissioned three missions teams and the school choir to travel around the United States and overseas for spring break, beginning Friday, March 8. Each year Judson students spend their spring break traveling domestically and internationally to partner with charity organizations. This year, Judson is partnering with organizations like the John M. Perkins Foundation for Racial Reconciliation in Jackson, Miss.; the Del Camino Network in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic; and churches in Sierra Leone. Students help these ministries by providing manual labor, childcare, academic tutoring, aid for soup kitchens and homeless shelters, and much more. Judson University’s Choir will be on tour across the Midwest, visiting churches in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. Jodie (Baker) Sutton, Sheryl (Jedd) Biachin, Marcus Lauria, Cathy (Reardon) Liebenow and Michelle (Yubeta) Swidrak will bring to 56 the number of former Judson athletes who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 2003. Additionally, the 1993-94 women’s volleyball team will be recognized. This is the second year a team has been honored by the Hall of Fame.

Move in begins at 9 a.m. and orientation has a full schedule of events throughout the weekend. Orientation Weekend will begin on Friday, August 24 and will go through Monday, August 27. Judson University Hosts Delegation from Nagaland

(Elgin, IL - June 28, 2012) A group of eight dignitaries from Nagaland will convene on the Elgin campus of Judson University this week to discuss matters of governance and learn more about the cities of Elgin and Chicago.

The group arrived Monday evening from New Delhi. The group spent Tuesday in Chicago, visiting the Willis Tower, architectural boat tour, lunch at Navy Pier, and dinner at Lou Malnati's. Wednesday morning, the group will gather for breakfast in the Reed Room of the Betty Lindner Campus Commons to meet with City of Elgin officials, followed by a tour of City facilities and the Police Station. The delegation will depart Wednesday evening for Washington, D.C.

Corey Burke Receives NCCAA's Game Plan 4 Life Award

(Elgin, Ill. May 9, 2012) Recent Judson Graduate Corey Burke has won his third major award this year for the Judson University athletic department as he was named the NCCAA Game Plan 4 Life winner this week. The NCCAA’s Game Plan 4 Life award is given to the top NCCAA male and female athlete for their efforts both on and off the field in service, academics and athletics.

Burke, who was the NCCAA’s men’s soccer award winner for the Kyle Rote, Jr. award this year, also was voted Judson’s first-ever male CoSIDA Academic All-American in the fall by the NAIA sports information directors. The two-time NAIA and NCCAA scholar-athlete played three years for his father, Steve, and was a member of the 2009 NCCAA National Championship team while also being voted the top NAIA junior athlete as the A.O. Duer award winner in June 2011. This year he became a NCCAA All-American for the first time, too. Burke graduated on April 28 with his degree in Biology/Pre-Med from Judson and will be moving on to medical school in the fall.

(Elgin, IL - May 2, 2012) More than 375 local volunteers and civic leaders gathered at Judson University on Tuesday morning, May 2, for the Christian liberal-arts school's annual community prayer breakfast.

The morning's festivities began with the announcement of this year's winner of the D. Ray Wilson Award, Edward Hunter, current vice president at Provena Mercy Center in Aurora. He was founding board member of the Greater Elgin Family Care Center and has continued to serve as volunteer chaplain for Fox Valley Hospice and the Elgin Police Department. He also is a board member of the Illinois Eye Bank and Midwest Eye Bank and serves on the Salvation Army’s Advisory Council and the Coalition of Elgin Religious Leaders. Edward is a member of the Northern Illinois Critical Incident Debrief Team, the Elgin’s Care for the Underserved Coalition, the Aurora Primary Care Consortium and volunteers for the Community Crisis Center and Kane County Health Department. His years of volunteering and service have been recognized through several awards.

(ELGIN, IL April 19, 2012) Judson University will host its second World Leaders Forum this Saturday, April 21, with former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev as the keynote speaker. The World Leaders Forum will feature a VIP Keynote and Reception at 3:30 p.m. in the Betty Lindner Campus Commons of Judson’s Elgin campus (1151 N. State St.). A second speech, which sold out on March 1, will follow for Judson’s students, faculty, staff and alumni at 5:30 p.m. in Herrick Chapel.

President Gorbachev experienced significant social, economic and political changes while he was leader of the former Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. While in office, he met frequently with then U.S. President Ronald Reagan to discuss global concerns and the impact of the ongoing arms race between the two countries.

Judson to Host Two-Day Blood Drive on January 25-26

(Elgin, IL - January 23, 2012) Judson will host a two day blood drive next Wednesday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday, January 26 from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Both will be held in the Eagle Lounge in Lindner Tower. During the September blood drive, 153 lives were saved as a result of the donations. The goal for the two-day January drive will be to save 300 lives.

(Elgin, IL - October 20, 2011) Carl Lindner Jr., 92 years old, passed away Monday night, Oct. 17, 2011. Carl is the brother of Robert Lindner, honorary trustee of Judson University. Carl is survived by his wife Edyth Bailey and their three grown children. Carl received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from Judson in 1982 and teamed with his brother, Bob, several times in capital programs at Judson University. He and his family have been true friends in the cause of Christian higher education. The Judson community extends its prayers and condolences to the Lindner family at this time.

Judson University Celebrates Spanish-English Ministry Students in Formal Certification Ceremony

(Elgin, IL – October 13, 2011) Judson University celebrated with 12 students in a ceremony for completing certificates in Spanish-English Ministry Studies (SEMS) on September 23 in Herrick Chapel on Judson’s Elgin campus.

The program, created in collaboration with several local churches, is housed under Judson's Leadership Development Group. Participating students are primarily lay leaders in local Hispanic churches. Though the program does not provide academic credit, each of the courses was taught in Spanish by leaders with doctorates and extensive experience in Spanish ministry. The program provides in-depth ministry and biblical education that the students may not have been able to attain otherwise.

(Elgin, IL June 22, 2011) Dr. Steve Layne was elected to serve the International Reading Association Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning in May. He is the second professor from a Christian university elected to this body since its inception.

The International Reading Association, which is based in Newark, N.J., serves a membership of 78,000 educators worldwide, and the 10 members of the Board serve as literacy leaders and consultants on literacy-related initiatives for the governments of both progressive and developing countries.
Dr. Layne directs Judson University’s Master of Literacy program and teaches within Judson University’s School of Education. He is also a published author of children, young adults and educational books as well as a sought-after speaker at international educational conferences. Dr. Layne also is the creator of the Literacy in Motion Conference, which takes place every June for educators interested in hearing from some of the most beloved children’s books authors and experts in teaching literacy in the classroom.

NAIA Names Judson University's Corey Burke as Recipient of the Prestigious A.O. Duer Award

(Elgin, IL June 3, 2011) The Judson University athletic department has been awarded another NAIA national award this year as junior Corey Burke has been named the A.O. Duer award winner. This award is awarded to the top junior in the NAIA that who has excelled in character, playing ability and scholarship.

Burke was the second leading scorer for his team this past year and was named All-CCAC. The pre-med major carries a 3.9 GPA and is a NAIA and NCCAA scholar-athlete. In the last two years he has helped Judson to a CCAC regular season championship, a NCCAA National Championship, and two NCCAA National Tournaments. He is the son of Judson’s head coach, Steve Burke, who is also the all-time wins leader for the NAIA.

The Monetary Award Program (MAP) is a need-based grant that comes from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, which is funded by the State of Illinois, and provides funds for eligible students (based on their FAFSA report) in amounts up to $4,720 per year to help pay for tuition.

Nicole Dimiceli has been voted onto the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District First-Team. Caleb Sutton became the first track athlete to earn a national award at the NCCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Meet as he was named the NCCAA Wheeler Award recipient. Finally, the April 2011 edition of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes national magazine Sharing the Victory, featured the Judson University FCA huddle group with an article on what God is doing in the lives of the athletes and on campus.

Brigitte Shim is an architect, partner in the firm Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, and a professor at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica, trained at the University of Waterloo with degrees in environmental studies and architecture, and resides and works primarily in Toronto. Among her many recognized appointments, she has served as the Eero Saarinen Visiting Chair at Yale University, a visiting professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, and an invited visiting professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.

Nominations Sought for D. Ray Wilson Community Service Award

(Elgin, Ill. March 18, 2011) Nominations are being sought for Judson University’s annual community service award titled the D. Ray Wilson Community Service Award, which honors a volunteer in the Fox Valley for their dedication and community service.

Nominees eligible for the award will have volunteered for multiple agencies and devoted a concentrated effort of service on behalf of the agencies. Past award winners have included Nancy Schueneman, Jack and Marlene Shales, Murna Hansemann, Floyd Brown and Claire Ollayos. The award recognizes volunteers who are committed to making a difference in the Golden Corridor, which has been defined as communities of Elgin, East Dundee, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, South Elgin, Schaumburg, St. Charles, Bartlett, Hoffman Estates, and Barrington. Judson's Imago Film Festival Announces Speakers

(ELGIN, IL, January 25, 2011) The seventh annual Imago Film Festival will be held March 28-April 1, 2011, at Marjorie Hall Thulin Performance Hall on the Judson University campus in Elgin, Ill. The Imago Film Festival showcases faith-based indie film that emphasizes image and story.

This year’s film festival will screen original films and feature nationally known speakers. Speakers will include David Nixon, producer of the films Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and Letters to God, and Jeffrey Overstreet, author of Through a Screen Darkly and former film editor for Christianity Today.

In addition to original short films, the following feature-length film will be screened and discussed by film critic J. Robert Parks: Where the Wild Things Are (based on the classic children’s book by Maurice Sendak and directed by Spike Jonze, the film explores the complexities of imagination with a poignancy designed for adult viewers).

Judson University and Yancheng Teachers University Sign Agreement to Open a China Center at Judson University

(ELGIN, IL – December 17, 2010) After this weekend, Elgin-based Judson University is able to claim that it may be one of the few Christian liberal arts universities to have a China Center on its campus. On December 13, Judson University signed an agreement with Yancheng Teachers University of the People’s Republic of China to create a China Center at Judson. The agreement states intentions to open the center by Aug. 1, 2011.

Judson Music Department to Host “A Celebration of Lessons and Carols” for December 4 Concert

(ELGIN, IL November 20, 2010) “A Celebration of Lessons and Carols” will be the theme for the December 4 Judson Music Concert to be held at 8 p.m. in the Herrick Chapel. Performers will include the Judson University Choir, Chamber Singers, Brass and String ensembles and music faculty.

The Music Department is also inviting all choir alumni for a "Christmas reunion" to perform with the Judson choir. State St., Elgin) for students involved in a two-car accident that took place last night on State Route 31. (Elgin, IL November 18, 2010, 11:55 p.m.) Judson University freshmen Nick Schlegel, 18, of Bartlett, Ill., and Derek Radesky, 20, of Chicago, were injured this evening as they pushed their car north on State Road 31, west of River Road and toward a gas station because the car was out of gas. Another car of Judson students ran into the stalled car and pinned the students.

Judson University Theater to Stage Spoon River Anthology

(Elgin, IL November 11, 2010) Judson University’s Theater will stage a one-act drama based upon Spoon River Anthology (1915) by Edgar Lee Masters on November 19-21 in the Thulin Performance Hall of the Edward and Alice Thompson Center at Judson’s Elgin campus (1151 N. State St.) The play explores the accounts of a fictional small town's lives and losses based on epitaphs from the town's gravestones.

Judson Music Department Invites Community to Fall Concert Series

(ELGIN, IL October 7, 2010) The public is invited to attend a series of concerts to be held by the Judson University’s Music Department. Judson’s Community Orchestra will give a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, in the Herrick Chapel on Judson’s Elgin campus. Judson’s Symphonic Band will give a concert with music that will provide a Veterans Day Tribute at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 18, in the Herrick Chapel. Judson’s Alumni Award Winners Return Home to Celebrate Accomplishments

(ELGIN, IL September 29, 2010) What do a youth pastor from Ohio, a charity marathoner from Dekalb, a pharmaceutical developer from Cleveland and an architect from Tuscan have in common? They all returned to Judson University on September 24 as this year’s Alumni Award winners for Judson’s annual homecoming banquet held at Randall Oaks in West Dundee, Ill.
Three of the graduates received a Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is given to recognize alumni that have made outstanding contributions to their profession and community as they model excellence in their vocations. This year's distinguished alumni are Mark Gregory '77 of Dekalb, Ill., Dr. Nick Petousis '85 of West Lake, Ohio, and Scott Feltheim '96 of Tucson, Ariz. The Alumnus of the Year Award is given to recognize alumni that have made significant contributions to the Church and to society. Judson’s Alumnus of the Year for 2010 is Rev. Kevin Thomas '93 of North Canton, Ohio. Rev. Kevin Thomas is beginning his seventeenth year in youth ministry.

Judson Mourns the Passing of Dr. Harm A. Weber - Updated

(Elgin, Ill. UPDATED April 29, 2010) On Tuesday, April 27, Judson University’s chancellor and former president, Dr. Harm A. Weber of Bradeton, Fla., passed away due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 83.

A founding member of Judson’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Weber served as president of Judson from 1969 through December 1991. When he became president of Judson in 1969, the university was experiencing tight finanical conditions, a situation that he turned around. During his tenure as president, he oversaw several new buildings on the campus. When he retired as president in 1991, he was named Chancellor of Judson, a title he held until his death. Since his retirement, split their time each year between homes in Minnesota and Florida. In 2007, Judson’s newest building, the Harm A. Weber Academic Center, was dedicated to the former president.

An article written by Jeff Kolkey appeared in the Rockford Register Star and reports on upcoming plans for Judson's graduate architecture students to offer urban planning designs for the city of Rockford over the summer.
