Chair and Professor of Communication Arts Tenure track

Job Summary

A full-time position in the DeMoss Center for Worship and the Performing Arts; assistant or associate level, starting AY 2020-2021.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Administer chair responsibilities including growing enrollment and retention, advising, curriculum development, course scheduling
  • Recruit, hire, mentor, and support Speech Communication adjunct faculty
  • Prepare and teach communication courses which may include day, evening, and hybrid. Current courses include Foundations of Speech, Oral Interpretation of Literature, Persuasion, Storytelling, Language and Society, and Communication Theory
  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed substantive feedback on assignments and presentations
  • Offer regular and predictable access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods
  • Advise and assist students in planning an educational program and in selecting courses, and when necessary, refer students to appropriate student services for assistance
  • Participate as an active member of the Demoss Center for Worship in the Performing Arts (Worship Arts, Music, Communication Studies)
  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns
  • Represent and advocate for the Communication Arts Department at faculty and campus-wide events
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct
  • Design, implement, and document Communication Arts Department university assessment
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds as a positive contributing member of the campus community
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration, and staff
  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student inclusiveness
  • Other duties as agreed upon with Provost and Associate Provost
Required Qualifications

At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

  • A terminal degree in Communication or in a closely related field with significant coursework in graduate-level speech communication from a regionally accredited institution

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

  • Successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level (university or community college)
  • Experience supporting adjunct faculty
  • Experience implementing innovative teaching methods such as team teaching and/or active learning strategies
  • Experience implementing strategies to improve student success and retention
  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems (Blackboard, etc.)
  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, ability, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
