Who's in your library? Creating classroom libraries that reflect the passions, interests and identities of our readers (Grades K-5). A classroom library is the heart and soul of a classroom community. When we organize our books into collections that reflect our students, we let them know that this space is for them. Better yet, when we involve them in the process of curating the collection, they develop the dispositions of a reader. Assessment, instruction, and book love all rolled into a classroom library.

About Clare Landrigan

Clare Landrigan is a staff developer who is still a teacher at heart. She began working with Tammy Mulligan 24 years ago co-teaching in an integrated first and second-grade classroom at the Eliot Pearson Children's School in Medford, Massachusetts. Clare and Tammy now lead a private staff development business, Teachers for Teachers, and spend their days partnering with school systems to implement best practices in the field of literacy. They believe that effective professional development includes side by side teaching; analysis of student work; mutual trust; respect; and a good dose of laughter. The term "lifelong reader" is more than a slogan or jargon in a mission statement. Lifelong readers need passion, agency, and a sense of inquiry in their reading lives. They also need books. Assessment is an integral part of instruction. For the past decade, the focus on assessment—particularly via high-stakes mandated tests—has shifted away from the classroom and left teachers feeling like they are drowning in data. Assessment is, and needs to be again, much more than a number. Assessment in Perspective is about moving beyond the numbers and using assessment to find the stories they tell. This book helps teachers sort through the myriad of available assessments and use each to understand different facets of their readers. It discusses how to use a range of assessment types—from reading conference notes and student work to running records and state tests—together to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of a reader. The authors share a framework for thinking about the purpose, method, and types of different assessments.
