Nestled along the scenic riverside, just a stone’s throw from the architectural wonders of Chicago, the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at Judson University offers a unique blend of rigorous academic training while in a Christ-centered educational environment. Established in 1997, the program has grown into a vibrant community that emphasizes innovation, environmental stewardship, and professional preparedness, setting it apart in the landscape of architectural education.

Degree Programs: A Comprehensive Journey

The department provides two main pathways for aspiring architects. The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (BAAS) requires 136 credit hours, serving as a foundational step for students aiming to pursue advanced studies. This is complemented by the Master of Architecture (M.Arch), a 52-hour program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Notably, the M.Arch program includes a one-year Preceptorship, which is an internship that allows students to accrue 1,600 hours towards the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Architectural Experience Program (AXP) requirements, a critical step towards professional licensure.

Unique Features of the Program

Judson’s architecture program prides itself on an innovative approach to education. The student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1 allows for individualized attention, fostering close mentorship relationships between students and experienced faculty, all of whom hold terminal degrees in their fields. This small community of approximately 150 students promotes a collaborative learning environment where ideas can flourish.

One of the standout aspects of the program is its emphasis on environmental stewardship. The curriculum is infused with principles of sustainable design, encouraging students to consider the impact of their architectural choices on the environment. The Harm A. Weber Academic Center, a LEED Gold Certified building designed by renowned architect C. Alan Short, serves as both a teaching tool and a workspace. This 88,000-square-foot facility is one of North America’s most energy-efficient academic buildings, embodying the program’s commitment to sustainability.

A Curriculum with Purpose

The architecture programs at Judson are structured to be completed in five years, incorporating a seamless transition from the undergraduate to the graduate level. This design allows students to engage in practice-based work experience that enriches their education and prepares them for real-world challenges. Each student participates in a study-abroad trip to Europe after their junior year, immersing themselves in historical and contemporary architectural practices.

The curriculum not only covers technical skills but also incorporates a Christian worldview, fostering ethical practices in design and encouraging students to consider the broader implications of their work. This unique perspective is a hallmark of Judson University, setting it apart from other institutions offering architecture programs.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

In addition to rigorous academic offerings, the department provides various opportunities for students to engage with the broader architectural community. The Draewell Gallery on campus showcases the work of local and national artists, creating a dynamic space for dialogue and artistic expression. Each spring, seniors from the architecture, art, and design programs present their final projects in a professional gallery setting, allowing them to gain valuable experience in exhibition and critique.

Judson also hosts the Architecture and Interior Design Workshop, a summer program that introduces high school students to the fundamentals of architecture. Participants explore design principles and visit prominent architectural sites in Chicago, igniting their passion for the field early on.

Conclusion

The Department of Architecture and Interior Design at Judson University offers a distinctive and enriching educational experience for aspiring architects. With its NAAB-accredited programs, commitment to environmental sustainability, and a supportive community rooted in Christian values, Judson prepares students not only to become skilled professionals, but also to be thoughtful leaders in the architectural world. Whether through hands-on learning experiences, personalized mentorship, or exposure to international design practices, students emerge ready to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the field of architecture. If you’re looking for a program that balances academic rigor with ethical practice and creative exploration,  apply today and discover how Judson University’s architecture program can help you achieve your career goals!
