When Victoria Strissel graduated from Elgin Community College (ECC), she faced a pivotal decision: where to continue her academic journey. For Victoria, that journey led her to Judson University—a place where faith, community, and academic excellence converge.
Victoria, a commuter student, describes her transition to Judson as “smooth,” despite encountering some challenges with transferring credits. “Some of my credits didn’t transfer originally. After being proactive and working with the the supportive staff at Judson, I was able to explain that they met the requirements and ended up getting them accepted.” she shared.
One of the key reasons Victoria chose Judson was its unique integration of academics and faith. “The professors here bring a spiritual perspective into their teaching,” she explained. Victoria emphasized that one thing that sets Judson apart from other universities is the unique open-door policy of the faculty and the supportive community on campus.
Victoria’s love for music is evident in every aspect of her life at Judson. Between classes, studying, and spending time with friends in Thullen Hall, she dedicates hours to practicing her craft. Her talent and commitment earned her a music scholarship when she decided to transfer, an achievement she was able to obtain when meeting with Dr. Warren Anderson prior to the fall semester.
Beyond academics, Victoria stays actively involved in Judson’s Creative Society and participates in Open Mic Nights, where she shares her passion for performance with the campus community. These experiences have allowed her to expand her creative horizons while connecting with others who share her love for the arts.
Victoria has also immersed herself in Judson’s music programs, joining the choir, chamber choir, orchestra, and theater. While initially hesitant about participating in a choir tour, she found it to be one of her most rewarding experiences. “I was nervous at first and wasn’t sure about what I had signed up for, but I ended up loving it and having some of the most fun while on the choir tour,” she shared with a smile.
As a commuter student, she emphasized how Judson’s welcoming environment helped her feel connected, even without living on campus. “When you connect with others spiritually, you develop real friendships,” she shared.
Her advice for other transfer students? She shares the importance of being proactive was a huge component to making her year one to remember. She encourages all transfer students to take the time to ask questions, get involved, and embrace opportunities—even the ones that don’t seem exciting at first. You’ll be surprised by how much you’ll grow.
Victoria’s story is a testament to the transformative power of Judson’s community and resources. From navigating the transfer process to thriving as a commuter student, she has made Judson her home away from home. Her journey from ECC to Judson exemplifies the university’s mission of shaping lives that shape the world—one transfer student at a time.
