[ELGIN, IL] – Judson University is excited to share the release of Zep’s Surprise, a delightful new children’s book by alumnus and trustee Randy Gauger (‘69). Released on October 1, 2024, by Ambassador-International Publishing, this touching story is designed for children ages 4-8 but offers an inspiring message that resonates with readers of all ages.
Meet the Family: Judson Alumnus and Trustee Turned Author
What makes Zep’s Surprise even more special is that it’s a true family effort. Randy and his wife, Mary, are proud to see their granddaughter, Sophia Duguid, bring the story to life through her beautiful illustrations. Sophia, an educator based in Vancouver, Canada, adds a personal touch to the book with her artistry. Adding to the multi-generational connection, the Gaugers’ daughter, Christy (Gauger) Duguid, is also a proud Judson University graduate.
“It was such a fun and meaningful experience getting to work creatively with my grandpa to bring this story he wrote to life!”, Duguid shares about her work on this book.
A Glimpse into the Storyline
At its heart, Zep’s Surprise follows the journey of Zep, a lovable dog who finds his forever home through adoption. The story gently introduces young readers to the idea that they are deeply loved and treasured by God. “Zep’s experience may help someone who has been adopted realize what a privilege it is to be chosen,” says Gauger. Inspired by real events in the Gauger family, the book is a beautiful reminder of love, belonging, and faith.
In a special gesture, Judson University gifted Zep’s Surprise to its recent graduating class in December—offering them a heartfelt reminder that God treasures everyone. no matter where life takes them.
Gauger and his wife, Mary, have lived much of the story behind Zep’s Surprise, though Gauger humorously notes that their beloved dog did not actually talk. “Zep’s surprise may become your surprise too,” he shares, inviting readers to discover life’s greatest treasure—God’s unconditional love.
